I've read a few posts regarding what TH said about....

keeping up with the "Joneses".

Many on CB don't understand the back end process of what is involved for a University to fund a large sporting event. Recently, Bronco mentioned percentages about Universities that are in the black or red in terms to expenses and income. LDS church schools, universities operate in the black and that is how things are done by the BOT. There is sound financial wisdom in this as being debt free is the smartest economic remedy for any situation. This also puts BYU in greater position moving forward in terms of sports. The finacial risk on BYU is non-existent. They are a debt free church and operate in the black, any sound financial expert views that as a MAJOR PLUS.

From new buildings, to maintenance, BOT ensures that every hinge, screw, knob, door, pour cement is all accounted for not only NOW, but long into the future. They are visionary, they are fiscally sound, they are disciplined and that is an excellent trait to have leading not only THREE major universities, but missions, vehicles, temples, buildings around the world and various other outlining projects. All of this takes a budget and BYU isn't exempt from this.

Tom view is just his own world and like any other dept at BYU, I or H, the process is the same. Submit your budgets for a TWO year budget cycle. Each BYU dept submitted their budget to BYU and then to the BOT (I am keeping this process simple for CB'ers). BOT goes through EVERYTHING. Result is yeah or nay, that simple.

What you have seen with improvements to LES, bball, etc was all funded by a budget. That is a great sign as MANY universities are BLOWN away by what BYU can AND does with what they have. I have seen first hand, many discussions where AD, Dept heads for sports will just be left with their jaw open as to how BYU can do this, when other schools can't. Simple stated, BOT knows to the DETAIL what is going on in CFB. They are not naive, they are not blind, they KNOW.

And because of what they KNOW, they plan accordingly.

Now, this brings us to now and down the road. So, where does this leave BYU? BYU is in a MUCH BETTER position NOW than ever before and the main point everyone on CB needs to realize that BYU intent has NEVER been to keep up with the Joneses. No, BYU intent all along is do to what they do best and better than others and that is to:

  1. Live within their means
  2. Pay for things on a budget

Is this anything new? No. This is how things are done at BYU and other church functions. BOT fully realizes that future options in P5 allow for BYU sports to be self sufficient, which is the END goal for any BYU sporting event. BYU baseball will be getting a new video board, why is that? Because like any organization, you plan and budget for that as well as address game experiences for your fans. That simply means, BYU, more so than any other University will budget and plan for better back end technology and most on CB will never see. When you have a solid back end, your front end can be a much better experience.

BYU sports are in a great spot folks, it really is. No need to worry if there will be enough funds for every item that so called other BIG schools go for. BYU will have MORE than enough to tackle any scenario out there NOW and into the future.

I'm grateful for Tom and his vision with the entire BYU athletics. He is respected as an AD around this nation and is very very approachable. BYU new President will be looking out for BYU interests and the BOT is well aware of this.

Major thing for us as FANS, Coaches and players...JUST support our team and WIN. Back end is fine, now let's focus on getting out butts to the seats and wearing our school colors proudly AND often. Educate fans where you go and offer sugguestions to BYU via email. They do listen folks, they really really do.
