It's the time of year when expectations on here are sky high. And so, like a good soldier, it is my duty to bring those expectations back to reality.
The good news is that I think the OL is improved, Taysom should be better at throwing the ball and barring injury should still have an excellent year. I also believe this team is the deepest in BYU history at the skill positions. RB is the only skill position where I don't feel like we have a ton of depth. We seem to also have more transfers from other top tier college football teams to augment our depth.
The reality is however that Bronco & Anae just aren't good at in-game adjustments and unless there are improvements in this area, expect to lose a couple of winnable games. Both coaches are stubborn to a fault. Bronco still far too often has LBs cover slot receivers and is terrible at blitzing including disguising blitzes. The only time we blitz even moderately well is when it is game planned and practiced extensively before a game (a la Oklahoma in 2009) otherwise we're no good at getting to the QB against half decent competition (think FSU 2009 and OSU 2012).
Offensively, the struggles last year were in the "blue zone" and the 3rd quarter. For some reason, every time we were in the blue zone last year, our offensive suddenly exclusively tried to run the ball. Rarely did we every try to throw a fade even when we had single coverage on one side. And why this was the game plan, considering the OL issues, remains a mystery to me. The 3rd quarter issues seem to come about because the other team makes half time adjustments but we seem a little slow to make changes on our side. It's like it takes 3 to 4 possessions before we decide to adjust as well.
The bottom line is that our coaches need to build more flexibility and strategy into their game plans. I often feel that, Anae especially, our coaches truly believe we can simply out-execute our opponents to the W. That may have worked against MWC opponents but that is not going to consistently work against better teams.
