Tui is associated with royalty or chiefdom in Samoan. Tuimanu'a was the king of the Manu'a islands in American Samoa in ancient times. Samoans referred to the Tongan king as TuiToga. Many Samoan surnames use the Tui prefix which ties back to some chief title or family/village royalty generations ago.
