pretty darn expensive. I know average might not be the best statistic, but here's some data based on average numbers for Utah:
http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/49000.html
Average income: 58K = $4800/month
Average home value: 218K
That could easily be a $1500/month payment (4.X% interest).
Take out taxes and tithing and what are you down to? Then take out your house payment. And you have 4 kids ... how much for clothing and food again?
And mercy knows we pay way too much for babysitting around these parts (another topic for another day
, and babysitting is required because if you bring a young child to the game, Cougarboarders will be upset with you.
Oh, and you have to dress your whole family in Nike-approved gear of the right color for the game. Or else you're a bad fan according to CB.
Folks, many families just can't afford it. That doesn't make them bad cougar fans. They love BYU just as much as you do. But a budget is a budget, and for many of us, season tickets just aren't in the picture. Please don't make us feel like second class citizens just because of money.
I really think the main problem with selling out LES is that ticket prices have gone up too fast for the local economy. Forget what people pay elsewhere. We all know Utah is a different dynamic. Housing is high, and we have lots of kids. The economy simply can't support the ticket prices, it seems to me. Someday I'll be that cool grandpa with season tickets taking grandkids with me to the games. Except at that point I'll be old and will probably yell at you not to stand up in front of me. So I'll be a bad fan then too, I guess.
But like many families, right now I just simply can't afford it.
I guess my main point is we don't really have the right to say other people are bad fans just because of money. Fandom should be measured in other ways, if we're going to measure it at all.
