I think it was September of 1981. The Colorado fans cheered when JM was injured
and the BYU fans were worried about BYU being led for awhile by an unknown sophomore running QB from CT with an unproven arm and very little game experience. Fortunately JM got better quickly. The other guy turned out to be pretty good though. Eventually.
