I think his record speaks for itself--at Utah State no less. He's done more with less than most coaches, I can tell you that. His isn't a glamorous system but it works and with less talent to boot. Give him BYU's national brand, facilities, conference affiliation (WAC/MWC) and budget and he's going to have a lot of success IMO with few down years.
Certainly that's what Dave has given us too, and quite frankly I prefer watching his brand of offense, but I often think that he doesn't get the best out of his players. Most "player's coaches" don't. However, they do get the recruits and eyeballs on their games. Those are certainly considerations. All in all I'm happy with what we've got but at times I wish we had more of a basketball coach when the in-game situation/match-ups/chemistry/talent was less than desirable--and that's been the case at BYU from time to time.
