and when he was hired we had no way to know if he was a legitimate...
...replacement either. If you remember he was the 3rd choice of the BYU Administration after Kyle backed out to take the Utah job. BYU AD was about to give the job to Lance Reynolds. Not knowing for certain is sometimes part of the risk you take in changing coaches.

Bronco's done some good things. He's stabilized the program after the Crowton mess and early on while using Crowton's players Bronco had some pretty good success, won a couple MWC titles and was a regular fixture in the national rankings.

What else will be a part of his legacy? 4 game losing streak to rival Utah (gone 3-6 overall), gotten pummeled twice in the past 5 yrs to the other in-state rival (starting to lose ground in that one), no longer can get his team to 10 wins even with a MWC/WAC heavy schedule, embarrassing losses like 2011 Utah, 2008 Utah, last 3 TCU games, 09 FSU, 2010 and 2014 Utah St, 2 of last 3 games with Nevada, annual losing 2 of first 3 games each year, undisciplined/sloppy play, poor record in games after bye week (when you have extra time to prepare, track record of no longer holding players accountable/playing favorites, Riley, wasting the 2012 season and one of the best defenses in BYU history, repeated failures at hiring assistants, outbursts like the Pharisees and Sadducees comments, the outburst against fans this weekend, poor preparation for big games, poor in-game decision making/time clock managing/slow to adjust, teams don't play a full 60 mins, losing his locker-room and letting it overrun team chemistry to the detriment of the team (Riley vs Jake), not holding starting players accountable when they OBVIOUSLY weren't playing hard (Utah St 2011 game) and were tanking a game, not having capable backup QB's prepared, repeatedly poor management of special teams (no kickers, etc) etc.

Yes, we can find someone to be as good of a mentor in molding and shaping young men. Yes we can find someone to have great firesides on Friday night (I've heard Bronco speak, he's not a great speaker), so is the concern that we can't find a football coach who won't continue to repeat rookie learning mistakes 10 yrs into his career?

Is the concern we won't find a coach who is pretty conservative and routine with his preparation so that our opponents don't have too much trouble figuring out what we're doing and how to stop it?

Is the concern that we won't find a HC who can't set aside his love of himself and people he thinks are like him (Riley, Doman, Howell, Rudy/walk-on types, etc) from making sound decisions for the good of the team?

Is the concern we won't find a coach who will break the losing streak vs Utah and get us back to dominating Utah St every year?

The culture of a program is built one game at a time and one season upon another. The culture that Bronco has built at BYU is one of inconsistency, sloppy play, poor execution, losing to in-state rivals, 1-2 starts, predictable schemes, slow in-game adjustments, repeated mistakes, poor assistant coaching hires, not holding all players equally accountable, playing favoritism, poor OL play, inability to maintain a high level of play in games for a full 60 minutes week in and week out, stubbornness, pride/arrogance, stupid penalties killing the team, etc which is slowly eroding on field results to the point that the program he inherited from Crowton that was winning 10+ games every year is now winning 7+ games every year. Now we're seeing fan support starting to fade, less attendance at games, etc.

Bronco is a fine man. He did a nice job getting the program pointed in the direction we want to go. It's just clear now that he's peaked a while back and isn't the guy to get BYU to where we hope to be. We were all unsure about Bronco when we hired him but that was no reason to keep Crowton just like our not being sure of the next guy isn't a reason to hang onto Bronco any longer than we should when it's clear his Battleship has lost it's rudder and he can't get the ship pointed in the right direction anymore.
