Simply, most of our fans have much higher expectations than 7-6 each season.
If BYU's bar is only a winning percentage toward the end of the season, I'll lose interest (I've mostly already lost interest) as will most other fans. Like it or not, we gained thousands of fans under Lavell because he was continually relevant on the national stage. As we all know, he won a national championship and we're still seeing the fruits of that. You can only survive on Lavell's success of the 70s and 80s for so long. Sooner or later, my kid, who wasn't alive during that time, needs to see something for himself because when I tell him how nice of a program BYU has and we go out there and the Aggies (who I told him sucked at football) run us off our field, the drive home becomes very confusing.
