Do I have to accuse Bronco of being gay to not be called delusional?

There are some annoying uber-optimists on the board but the vast majority of those being accused of being "blue-goggled-head-in-the-sand-homers" are really just reacting in opposition to other posters simply being jerks.

I honestly think there are some CB'ers that simply don't like Bronco's style and are little disappointed when BYU is successful with him as HC. Pathetic really.

So here's some reality for you. Mark May is right, BYU has never really been that great.

  • Since 1974 they've only beat 12 teams (give or take 1 or 2) that were ranked at the end of the season.
  • The 1977-1985 run really was against predominantly "Bo-Didley Techs". Watch some of those games. Opposing backfields had no idea what to do with a crossing pattern.
  • Ty Detmer Saved BYU from total mediocrity from 1989-1992.
  • After Ty, really only 1996 was exceptional for Lavell. 1994 and 1998 teams were "OK" and the rest were "meh" at best.
  • The Crowton years are what they are. A perfect storm of bad luck, injuries, wierd coaching, etc.
  • Bronco really did take BYU football to a different level under restrictions no coach in BYU history has faced.
  • Despite 10-3 in 2011, BYU's last "good" year was 2009.
  • This year's team lacks talent and experience in different spots. Tho' nobody will admit it, it's pretty obvious why Skye Povey started over more athletic but inexperienced DB's last year. He got beat a couple of times, but not like the young guys have this year by being out of position. Also, not having a "stud" on the D-line is killing BYU.
  • BYU typically rides the backs of a few phenomenal players. When they had more talent behind those players they've been able to make more noise.

In order to ratchet the program to a "higher level", BYU needs the following:

  • More depth or a more talented supporting cast.  A few great players can't carry BYU all the time.  More depth is needed.
  • More "studs".  KVN, Ziggy, Hill, remind us how phenoms make everyone elses jobs easier.
  • Better coaching.  The O-line problems in recent years and possibly the defensive struggles this year (this year really could be a talent/experience issue if you're being truly honest) show that really good assistant coaches are vital.

BYU really is poised to become a better program than it has ever been.

  • Independence has moved BYU away from tight association with the same old boat anchor around their neck MWC teams.
  • Mission age change will make scholarship management easier and give kids 5 to play 4 starting at age 20. Missions may became a true advantage for BYU. The first class of 18 year-olds missionaries will hit this year.
  • Recruiting appears to be improving, likely due to combination of exposure, Martzen, etc.
  • I think coaching has improved overall in the last 2 years. Hopefully BYU will see fit to significantly increase the assistant coach budget so that it can continue to improve.

Ultimately, I think overall BYU depth and talent will continue to improve, and the odds that they will get the difference maker "star" athletes will increase. This is all good, healthy fundamental stuff for the program.

Right now, Bronco is the HC.  He probably will be for a while.  I think he is capable of taking BYU to the "next level".  If he isn't he will move on sooner thatn later. This doesn't make me delusional.

Anyway, you don't have to be happy with BYU football right now, but you don't have to engage in the pathetic and extreme criticisms or myopic analysis trying to prove non-issues to express that un-happiness.

Oh, yeah...the jerk store called, they're out of CB'ers.
