Observations from Saturday
1) GIVE NATE FREAKING CARTER THE @#$%!! BALL! 12.4 ypc. Dude almost hits a Benjamin in 7 carries. Yes, I know it was Nevada. But he was beating them, every time he touched the ball.

2) I thought Robertson Daniel was consistently in good position. However, if he had made that interception on Fajardo's 4th quarter underthrown pass (right after they tied it up) it would have totally changed the tenor of the game. Reminded me of the color guy's comment in the Virginia game "the difference between a good play and a great play is making that interception."

3) Yeah, haven't been a huge Skye Povey fan. That said, I have less heartburn over him getting solid playing time when half our team is on crutches.

4) On the other hand, there is no longer any good reason for a senior to get playing time over an underclassman who shows similar ability OR greater potential than the senior. This season had better be about developing young talent. Because apart from the joy of playing the game and the chance to give young guys experience, everything else is gone.

5) A lot of people don't like the Howell hire. The results certainly don't look great. But I'm nowhere close to sold on Anae either. Which side underperformed more in this game, offense or defense? Our offense certainly didn't do the defense any favors with three turnovers in the second half. And it felt like the attempts to go long kept the offense from getting into a rhythm. Did Nevada's defense make adjustments to stymie our offense in the second half? Seemed like we made adjustments, and made exactly the wrong ones.

6) Pikula is like a human missile! Unfortunately, it's one of those kind that you fire with a nerf gun and it bounces off whatever it hits...

7) Did anyone else notice how the TV dude kept saying "COW-fusi?" And everytime I heard that name in association with a pass play, I would cringe. At what point is the move to LB properly labelled a failure? Is he still hobbled? He's just too good an athlete to be playing this way, it makes me sad.

8) PLEASE for the love of Jimmer, run the ball while we are still ahead! (See #1). Oh, never mind, now we're behind and have to catch up, go ahead and chuck it 40 yards.

9) Dear TV dude, when Stewart makes a smart play and scrambles for a 1st down and then slides, please DO NOT SAY "Stewart, looking just like Taysom Hill on that play..." Stewart was smart with his feet far more than he was dumb, but at no time did his scrambling remotely resemble Taysom Hill...

10) Mitch Mathews is an animal. A tall, lanky one with no hair on the sides of his head, but an animal nonetheless. His effort was outstanding. Except for the offensive pass interference that I never saw. He should definitely be Lurch for Halloween. What happened to our other receivers? Do we have other receivers? Leslie was there...and nobody else...

11) Can we try to go with what is working for a change? When I coach (I don't coach football) I go with what is working until it is not, then change. Sometimes I think Anae goes with what is not working until it works and then he changes... Oh yeah, see #1.

12) I've lost my second son. Well, he's not dead, but fandom has passed him buy. As I and my 16-year-old sat and watched (as we ALWAYS do) my 14-year-old passed through the room, saw that we were up 28-13, and prophesied "BYU will find a way to lose. Without Taysom, they always do. You guys should turn off the TV now while you're still happy." I didn't want to talk to him after the game. He watched Texas with me and was starting to be interested again until Utah State. He's been burned too many times I guess... It is, however, an anecdotal look at the memories that our youngest fans have of the Cougars.
