just because gay marriage is basically legal everywhere doesn't mean that we will ever be forgiven for having stood in the way. People haven't forgotten that until 1978 blacks could not receive the priesthood. They won't forget our support of prop 8. And it's not like we are allowing gay marriage in the Church. Believe me we will pay the price a long time.
