You MUST be willing to walk away. If the deal isn't good enough, you have to be

able to say, "No, thanks anyway, I'm out of here", and then actually leave. Don't just fake it; if they spot that you're a phony, you will get no mercy. If they know you're serious about leaving, they will be more willing to cut you a deal if they can.

Btw, hard-nosed don't seem to work as well on popular models.
