RE: My frosh year I knew half a dozen guys like this. They told everyone who
would listen that they were just a hair away from being on team and next year they would be. I was just as big and fast as these guys and I knew I wasn't close to being D1 talent. I mostly think these guys hoped that the girls would believe them. On the other hand, I lived next door to a guy on the football team. He was an amazing athlete. Bigger, strong, buffer, and faster than me and anybody else who wasn't on the team. He didn't have to tell stories to get attention from girls.

Many successful HS players don't understand the huge gap between good in HS and good enough to start in college. This is true in football, basketball and even in ladies sports. My wife was a starter for the BYU Vball team and all conference player on a top 10 team. We have remained friendly with the BYU Vball coaches, mens and ladies, over the years, and my wife's cousin starts on the team today. I can't tell you how many times people have told me about some amazing friend or family member who should play on the BYU ladies Vball team. I ask about the measurables. They tell me about some 5'7" young lady who is the star outside hitter on the local HS team, and who, according to them, is very athletic. However, no major D1 ladies Vball team starts any 5'7" outside hitter. That is even a little short for a setter. At that size you are battling to be a defensive specialist on the back row. D1 coaches are looking for young ladies who are 6 foot and taller to go across the front row.

The fact is, most folks don't really understand all that it takes to star in college, or even make the team.
