Porter AND his family were asked to come over to BYU, twice,
last year, the second time the family thought for sure he was getting offered. It obviously didn't happen. I am sure that his dad, a former starting qb for WYO, has had his feelings hurt and was angry that pretty much every other school in the country has offered him and BYU is still wondering if he is "good enough" to play for them. I understand why he could be upset (I went through the same thing with a family member that sacrificed a lot to try and play at BYU and ultimately may or may not have gotten a fair shot or an offer. You can get emotionally fired up when something like that happens to someone so close to you).

I was told that the coaches aren't completely sold on how good of a player he will be. I am sure recruiting is a very hard job and I am not slamming the BYU coaches but I do know that both Notre Dame and Ohio State, after working out Porter personally, offered him on the spot. Porter qualified and competed at the national SPARQ event a few months ago. In the preliminary round he finished high enough to advance and actually was on ESPN. A lot of the other kids were rb's and db's but he still had a crazy score, finished in the top 10 I think.

A couple of BYU coaches put him through a similar workout that the Notre Dame and OSU coaches did, didn't communicate with him or his high school coach for a couple of WEEKS after the workout, and never really gave his coach a good reason as to why they weren't offering. I personally read a text that Sark sent his coach while they were visiting Stanford that told his coach to bring the "big guy" down south so he can offer him the chance to play for a national championship.

I know many are sensitive to any criticism of the BYU coaches and you can take this for what it is worth, but EVERY school that has offered him, the head coaches (Meyer, Fisher, Sark, etc) have personally spoken with Porter and his coach numerous times. The last I heard, Bronco had called him once. Not a slam, just a fact.

There have also been people on this board that have questioned whether Porter is a good BYU "fit". Some people from the Salem area say he is really cocky and a "punk". For the most part, I think that comes from guys whose kids don't get the same attention that Porter gets. I am sure he has a lot of confidence and maybe walks around with a bit of a chip on his shoulder...EXACTLY the kind of mentality we want as a LB (look at his highlight video and you can see he is a hitter!) He has had plans on going on a mission (of course that can change) and even let BYU know that he was willing to go right out of high school or play a year.

It has been a really odd situation and personally I think some of the coaches let their egos get in the way and are not going to offer a kid just because the fan base or donors want him to get offered. Probably 80% of the offers he has gotten came after the coaches watched his highlight film. BYU has had that same film, has the opportunity to see him play numerous times in person but still has not offered. Maybe they really are smarter than the 30 plus coaching staffs that have offered him.

Really strange deal!
