Hilarious. Dudes clueless with the Xs and Os concluding that Bronco lacks
innovation and is running the wrong scheme. What scheme would be a better fit for our front 7? 4-3, where our lack of pass-rushing d-linemen would be even MORE exposed? 3-3-5, where our awful secondary would be relied on to carry an even heavier load?

The truth is that Bronco has proven himself to be an elite defensive coach over the course of this career. He knows how to design and run a defense, and just because he doesn't make major overhauls to scheme from week-to-week doesn't mean he's stubborn. There is a lot that can and is done in the way of innovation from within the general 3-4 scheme. Most on CB just don't know enough football to understand what changes week-to-week, or even drive-to-drive and play-to-play.

There's no question that the wheels have fallen off the defense this year, and that falls squarely on Bronco. That doesn't mean, however, that he's all of the sudden some awful defensive coach that has no idea how to tailor the scheme to his player's strengths.

Bronco's mistakes this year have nothing to do with the scheme. It has everything to do with allowing the culture of the team, and the defense in particular, to collapse because Bronco removed himself from working hands-on with the defense. When Bronco sits back and tries to manage like Lavell did, it just doesn't work. BYU has had its best success under Bronco when Bronco was running the defense, which set the tone for the entire program. Howell just doesn't have that ability, and Bronco can't have that same immediate impact if he's not working day-to-day with the defense.
