In Utah, IMHO, all it does is alienate non-LDS with kids.
When their kids go out trick or treating the next night or so, half the houses are dark or have no candy because they took care of it at the trunk or treat.
If I was not LDS and lived in a very LDS community, I can't think of many things that would irritate me more, because now you are messing with my kids.
