Take for instance Sitake
I don't think we could land Sitake, but let's say that BYU offered him something that was at least within the ball park of what he's making now and what he's been offered at other schools. If I'm Whit and I want to keep him on I ask him if he seriously wants to take over Bronco's job and deal with the fan base. The Utes have put up several losing seasons, and even though there was some swelling for a change in the coaching staff, it was nowhere close to as heated as this call for Bronco's head. A lot of that is because Ute fans calmed the storm and looked at Whit's body of work and said, look, he's done well before, the situation isn't easy, let's stick behind this guy and see what he can do to turn the program around.

Here, Bronco has a single loss and there was a lot of commotion for Bronco's head. I know that the frustration with Bronco goes deeper, and I know that some were calling for Bronco's head years ago, but looking at Bronco's body of work from a 30,000 foot perspective, he deserved a longer leash than some have given him. Again, looking from a 30,000 foot perspective, there are lots of things that are out of Bronco's control that have contributed to losses (injuries). If I'm Sitake, I know that sometimes the ball doesn't bounce your way, sometimes your recruits don't pan out, and sometimes you just have a bad year. I would rather keep my job after a single year of sub-par performance than be forced out by a rabid, unforgiving fan base.

Basically coaches might believe that regardless of past performance, at BYU even when you're thrown into a losing situation you're expected to win, then fired when you don't.
