Bronco sez the boneheaded penalties are okay...
...he applauds and celebrates the effort and doesn't pull the player for making the boneheaded late hit or roughing the passer that negated a critical 3rd down stop by the defense and allowed the opponent to get a do-over and continue their drive to the end zone.

It doesn't matter that you've posted previously that the boneheaded plays need to stop. Bronco doesn't hold them accountable so it continues because they're players he and Howell "trust".

A lot of things "should be known" or "should be done to hold players accountable" but they're not being done by coaches. That's why fans and former players are fed up.

Dallin Leavitt likely leads the team in 15 yd penalties and likely in the number of penalties that extended scoring drives yet he remains a coach's favorite because he's gritty and tries hard.

The problems the defense are having were problems long before the injuries started to mount. We started seeing the problems in the Houston game and once those problems were exploited by Houston, other teams looked at the film and went to town. Our approach was to try and execute "harder" . "if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten."

Bronco's legacy is not just found in what's going wrong this season.

It's also found in his 4 game losing streak to the yewts and his having won only 3 games out of 9 vs Utah.

It's found in his having been blown out in 2 of the past 5 games vs Utah St (and we are a lot closer to being 1-4 the past 5 yrs vs USU than we are the other way around). It's found in his inability to win big games (Utah 2008, TCU from 2008 on, FSU, etc.

It's found in his pattern of starting seasons 1-2 in six of his 10 seasons. It's found in his inability to develop talent for the next level and instead actually seeing players de-evolve in their time here (Matt Reynolds, etc).

It's found in his inept handling of his coaching staff and his inability to recognize, develop or hire good assistant coaches or coordinators (Anae makes it look easy by hiring 2J, Atuaia and Holliday in one off-season).

It's found in his winning record being based mainly on teams like UNLV, Wyoming, New Mexico, E Wash, No Iowa, E Ill, Idaho, Idaho St, NMSU, etc and in recent years we're struggling to beat WAC teams like Nevada, San Jose St, USU, etc.

It's found in his inability to recruit a decent OL (we've struggled in this dept since the bulk of Crowton's recruits left the program in 2009).

It's found in his inability to recruit and develop the QB position (where would BYU be the past 6 or 7 seasons if we hadn't been fortunate to get decent to good QB's transferring in? The guys Bronco has recruited have gone nowhere and done nothing) . The one QB Bronco had during this span that amounted to anything was the one who transferred away because he was buried on the depth chart and not even getting a courtesy "hello" from Bronco and staff. He went to SUU and ended up getting drafted in the NFL and is now a backup with the Chargers while we wasted time and energy playing a broken back QB with no arm. Didn't BYU USED to be known as "Quarterback U"?!

In the past 5 seasons or so since the last of Crowton's recruits left the program, has there been anything that Bronco has done that shows he has anything more to offer than what we've been getting since 2010? if you're happy with 8-5 and the occasional win over a downtrodden power conference team (like Texas), and annual struggles to beat WAC teams like USU, Boise St, Nevada, etc with players making repeated boneheaded plays that cost us games and there's no accountability by coaches, then Bronco is your man, and this is exactly where we're at now.

However, if you would like a few additional bonuses in your enjoyment of BYU football like winning 10 games regularly (not becuase the schedule is full of Idaho/Idaho St/NMSU/SJSU/Savannah St, etc) and finishing ranked in the top 25 more often than not, then Bronco has shown he is no longer that coach. If your desire is to make it big on the national stage and play in NYD bowls or compete for a place in the playoffs then you need to look elsewhere, Bronco absolutely is not your man.

Basically, here's no reason to hang onto him. We can find anyone to uphold the Honor Code. We can find anyone to blow football games and not hold players accountable and make terrible assistant coaching hires and not develop players for the NFL or prepare teams for big games, waste bye weeks, etc. Finding that is not hard. Bronco's not the only coach in the church who can magically do all that.
