"Many LDS prospects are drawn to BYU due to the program's standards and what it represents. With the number of LDS prospects growing every year, and only 105 scholarships available, the football program certainly can't accommodate all of them.
Some recruits understand this during the process, while other LDS recruits feel spurned.
“It’s a delicate balance,” Mendenhall said of recruiting LDS prospects. “Because when you tell them we’re loaded at the position most of the time they get offended, saying, ‘We’re better than who you already have.’ So that kind of pushes you in a corner of me saying, ‘I don’t think you are’ and then they usually go elsewhere.”
