“It’s a delicate balance,” Mendenhall said of recruiting LDS prospects. “Because when you tell them we’re loaded at the position most of the time they get offended, saying, ‘We’re better than who you already have.’ So that kind of pushes you in a corner of me saying, ‘I don’t think you are’ and then they usually go elsewhere.” Mendenhall, and other coaches, try and explain their position as best they can, and some recruits do react positively.
“A lot of times just how receptive they want to be has a lot to do if they come to BYU or not,” Mendenhall said.
