While I agree, from a PR perspective it is not the smartest thing for a coach to
say.

When a coach says, "we practice less and try to be more efficient"

or

"football is fifth"

Any game where the team appears to be unprepared or the coaches appear to be out-coached (or both) takes the fans back to those comments. Fans hear, "we are not preparing as much as the other guys" or "we don't care about this game as much as the other guys because we have our priorities straight".

Wooden won 10 NCAA titles; he can say anything he wants about how his extremely loaded basketball teams set their priorities. They probably would have won 9 if basketball was 10th on their list of priorities.
