On the surface, yes, in reality no
I am not saying it takes a back seat to Football, technique, scheme, development, because it doesn't. Any of us who are paid to coach know that we are there to coach, develop and win and when we are in meetings, on the field, playing games that is foremost. I promise you it is the same with Bronco too.

But to say it is secondary is just plain wrong. Football is a very small part of these young men's lives and as a high school coach even more so for me. The game goes away from 94% of players after High School (5.8% play college ball and that includes all levels including JUCO) less than 2% of College players get drafted or stick to an NFL roster. What is more important than how well we prepare these kids for Football is how we prepare them for life, because in many situations coaches have the opportunity to have the biggest impact on them.

So while the 'job' is coaching, the bigger calling is mentoring as we spend countless hours throughout the year (team building, travel, fundraisers, counseling) where a whistle or clipboard is never present. This is where the real priorities in life are instilled and demonstrated and where the coach does far more for the future of his players than anything he does related to the game. Even when the focus is the game, players are learning and practicing attributes that will serve them well their entire lives.

So, I respectfully disagree that this is 'secondary' as saying that really diminishes what the true role of a modern coach is. we coach to win on the field, but more importantly we coach to produce winners in life.
