one thing we've learned through all of this...don't believe A WORD anyone says
commissioners lie...school presidents lie...AD's lie...they'll come out and say "we're not adding anyone" and the next day TCU gets added.

i went back and watched the CFP selection show and it was ABUNDANTLY clear by the media talking heads, the Big12 commissioner and even art briles that the Big12 HAS TO change their format and add a CCG. the reason these statement hold more water is because they are in the moment, emotional reactions that have not been doctored by board meetings and attorneys. now the story is changing a bit because they've all had time to sit in a room with a bunch of attorney's and map out their game plan.

1. petition NCAA for waiver for 10 team league to have CCG. this will be denied. P12 will pressure NCAA to be just and remind them they just were forced to add 2 teams to get CCG. other P5 conferences will remind them they have also expanded and divide their pie up among many more members and that it is not fair that Big12 continues to try and be the exception to the rule in everything they do. you can't have your cake and eat it too. if the extra few million are worth it, then take your money. but if having a CCG and one extra game against a ranked opponent on the most watched weekend in college sports is what you want to give one final push to the CFP, then take that. you can't have both. and stop crying when you get left out.

2. is the $$$ really that much more among 10 members? the value of some CCG has been estimated at $10M+, not to mention the non-monetary value of adding to SOS and the residual value that can have to teams that make the CFP! also, adding BYU and CSU or BSU would allow the Big12 to have games in THREE TIMEZONES. this would allow them to dominate the network coverage and re-structure the deal to give Fox and ESPN great options with regards to programming. they can have TCU @ WVU at Noon EST, then Baylor @ Texas at 4pm EST, then KSU @ BYU at 8pm EST. this puts the Big12 on ALL DAY LONG. no other major P5 can do this. B1G is on in the morning (i'm a west-coaster), P12 is the "night league" and besides a few night games, SEC and ACC are morning/afternoon games. there is more value to simple BYU eyeballs...they now can get eyeballs in 3 timezones and, if planned competently, can really dominate saturdays.

3. oliver luck's move to the NCAA really smells foul to me..."good ol' boys club" gonna change the rules for his old school. wouldn't be surprised if that happens, however, i bet if you could give truth serum to the Big12 president's they'd trade UL for WVU in a heartbeat. WVU belongs in ACC with Pitt, UL still would allow "east coast" time games but without moving so far east (400 miles more "western" than WVU). BYU adds, by far, more than any other option and the Big12 presidents and board need to take a big-picture look at the landscape of college football...it's dominated by divisions and CCG's...round robin 10 team leagues were so 2000.

4. staying at 10 and still doing round robin and then adding CCG does NOT solve your problems. it ADDS to them. under this format, EVERY SINGLE SEASON you will be pitting Baylor against TCU again (to use this year's example) and forcing Baylor to beat TCU TWICE to become champ. i get that happens on some years in other conferences, it's unavoidable with cross over games, but if it can be avoided it should. now baylor will be whining because they are 1-1 against TCU but somehow TCU is the champ? this will happen EVERY season. nightmare. playing 12 teams means you have two 6-team divisions, which is 5 division games + 3 cross over games, meaning every kid in 4 years will play every school in conference home-and-away by the time they are done. beef up your OOC scheduling to force them to add at least 2 other P5 teams and only 1 FCS school and you'd have a really compelling schedule...this is how college football is working today.

stop trying to be the black sheep Big12 and add BYU already. i'd add CSU as traveling partner, but if you want to throw in Cinci or Memphis or some other crappy east coast school to appease WVU, go ahead...that's what it might take to get their vote...make BYU be the "island" (even though it's closer to every Big12 school except one).
