You're dismissing Whittingam's successes far too casually while elevating the importance of Bronco's track record of patsy-beating in the MWC and since. Whittingham's "magical" year rivals any in BYU history, including the NC. It could be easily argued that it was more impressive, given the strength of opponents. But we certainly hold on to those "magical" years delivered by the Cougs at BYU, don't we?
Yes, it took Whittingham all of three years to produce a great season in the PAC-12. And now more of his coaches are leaving. Red flag? Sure. Now, let's take a walk on over to Provo....I will take Whittingham's record with assistants, including the recent departures, over that of Bronco. Why? Well, one reason is that Whittingham beat us consistently, even with his OC coaching flux, and he's also delivered multiple seasons above and beyond what BYU has been able to achieve under Bronco. Or arguably, ever.
Also, those horrific campaigns in the PAC-12. He beat Bronco in both of those years.
I have not been a "fire Bronco guy." Even now, while I'd rather that he left and have only recently said as much, I think it best that he do so of his own volition. For a time, I believed Bronco was maximizing the BYU model and producing results that were very near the upper limit of what we could expect.
But I have to call a spade a spade, and Whittingham has Kicked. Bronco's. Yewt. For the life of me, I can't see how any rationale follower of football would equate the results between the two. I would swap Whittingham's results for Bronco's in a heartbeat.
