I actually had similar feelings back in the late 90's when McBride was slowly inching up on LaVell. To me that is when things really started with the changing of the guard. McBride did the heavy lifting, then Urban Meyer came in and added some of his coaching magic to an already talented squad. the Utah program has been on the rise ever since. Crowton and Bronco have had middling success. Neither has helped the program sustain success. Utah's trajectory has been slow (20 years) but it is moving forward. If I could even feel that the BYU program was moving forward it would make things much better. There would be some hope.
