Too many don't appreciate...
... just how much some of the WCC teams have keyed their game strategy on stopping Haws, and usually by flat out mugging him when he's trying to move without the ball. They guy gets beat up every game. When they do this, they have to leave other guys open. When the other guys step up, they sag back off Haws and he then lights them up. This is why Haws often scores more points early in the game and then in the 2nd half (see his quick 7 points he scored in the 2nd half vs the Zags).

People criticize Haws for not coming through at the end of the game at times. Usually, by game's end, the guy has played some of the most minutes on the floor and taken the most physical beating as well. It's not surprising that he might be pretty gassed at the end of the game. Tire legs lead to missed shots. You could lay some of this on coaching and not keeping him fresh enough in those situations, but until lately, the real problem was we needed more scorers to step up and take the pressure off Haws.

Against the Zags, they sold out to stop Haws and they did, but at the cost of several of our other guys going off on them. It resulted in a loss for the Zags. Had they not been keying on Haws the way they did, Halford, et al likely don't score as many and Haws probably gets his 20+ as usual. Bottom line is that you can contribute to a win in many ways besides scoring, and Haws played a critical role in the win vs the Zags , in spite of only scoring 10 and missing the 2 late FTs (can you say fatigue?).

Haws is a GREAT player as well as a great TEAM player. I don't understand the compulsion some fans feel to always find a whipping boy in BYU sports. Haws will go down as one of the BYU greats, whiney naysayer protestations notwithstanding.
