NoDUI's Bracket Round 1. Results are in!

Also known as the "super" bracket since all the "Super-" posters all ended up in the same bracket due to some kind of Excel sorting mishap, the NoDUI's bracket served up some of the most intense action so far with a few last second comebacks and jaw dropping defeats including our only 2 seed to drop out in the first round.  There will be a quick recap of the week to be posted soon, but until then, here's a summary of all of yesterday's action:

  • 1 Shimmy vs. 16 HawkCat: Where were the HawkCat supporters in this one? Probably out distributing burritos to the temp workers. I know I was tempted to throw Hawk a bone for all his philanthropy, but then Shimmy was like, “Helping people is stupid. Don’t vote for that crap. That’s stupid.” And I hung my head, “Yes sir. Here’s your vote, sir.” It was nice of Shimmy to only hit me once this time. He really is the greatest 1 seed and wins easily 161-58.
  • 8 quickryptonite vs. 9 Zach Morris: It turns out that quick was not the kryptonite to the mighty Zach Morris who is literally evil-laughing like a comic book villain after this narrow 116-102 victory. He’s still laughing right now even, a full on belly-clutching evil guffaw.
  • 4 swingcat vs. 13 gwalker: Fans of swingcat are devastated by this 108-106 thriller. This match set the record for ties and lead changes. At the end of the day, it was gwalker with the incredible upset joining a surprising pool of stalwart 13 seeds.
  • 5 spugeddy24 vs. 12 korihor: This one was decided pretty early as spugg shot out to a lead right out of the blocks. He spent the majority of yesterday afternoon doing a victory dance which consisted mainly of pelvic thrusts. Not a real surprise that korihor is cast out in the first round. The final score is 151-58.
  • 2 TheDeek vs. 15 WDaddy: So Deek sent me a boardmail yesterday asking how anyone was ever going to win one of these polls now that net neutrality was officially established as the law of the land. How could anyone win if the net is now neutral? No idea what he was talking about. Deek is the only 2 seed to fall with a final score of 129-90.
  • 7 Walter Bellhaven vs. 10 Bronoc: Another 10 seed upset, which proved to be one of the more dynamic seed pairings throughout the first round of this tournament. In a battle of who hates Bronco Mendenhall more, Bronoc defeated his outspoken opponent with a final score of 118-97.
  • 3 run26 vs. 14 Napoli: When Napoli exploded out of the gate taking a huge lead from the get-go, run26 just laughed. This wasn’t his first rodeo. He knows pretty much all there is to know about pacing. You don’t start out in a sprint when you’re running a marathon. Well, apparently you do in the Cougarboard Bracket Championship. Napoli wins 124-93.
  • 6 NanoFab Coug vs. 11 CSoul: In one of the more stellar upsets in the tournament, CSoul proved that he was way underrated as an 11 seed with a 133-77 demolishing of the hapless NanoFab Coug. Our winner now has his eyes set on the Championship bracket, drawing the cupcake 14 seed Napoli who has surely used up all three of his genie wishes on his first round upset.

  • 1 TNT vs. 16 yorksama: This one started out weird when TNT saw the initial results in favor of yorksama, making him jump up in shock and anger. His head went right through the top of the box and he was stuck there for a good couple of hours. Finally, the guys figured out that they could use Superkid’s tiny, lithe head as a wedge to wiggle TNT out. Now freed, he was able to start mashing his keyboard which somehow resulted in a bunch more votes. Again, something to do with Jefe’s coding. The final result was 153-76 in favor of Cougarboard’s favorite non-mod.
  • 8 SanDiegoCoug vs. 9 quikandskinny: SanDiegoCoug was just too slow and fat to beat quikandskinny who dominated this matchup 140-74. Does quik have enough left in him to take out TNT? He should. We’re talking TNT here.
  • 4 YardTime vs. 13 JackStack: These two old souls had a hard time taking this seriously. Kind of like a Globetrotters game. JackStack fulfilled the role of The Generals in this 154-61 outing, and YardTime is still out at the west bleachers signing (or I guess willing to sign) autographs if anyone is still interested.
  • 5 Tim vs. 12 The Underminer: The Underminer was able to stave off Tim all day yesterday by threatening to club a baby rabbit if he took a lead. Tim pleaded with his FO list to stop voting for him, for the sake of the bunnies. Too bad everyone on his FO list are jerks. Tim even tried to concede after his victory.  Sorry Tim, but this last minute 119-113 victory is official.  You're onto the next round.  Tim, please don’t open the picture that The Underminer boardmailed you this morning.
  • 2 scall vs. 15 Chester Copperpot: scall showed TheDeek how a 2 seed is supposed to do it with a resounding 157-55 victory over the shell-shocked Chester.  Looks like it just wasn't Chester's time.  Down here, down here it's scall's time.  scalls time!
  • 7 SPORTS vs. 10 slowhiteguy: Another casualty of another confusing brand change. It should have been much closer, but the day that Illegal Jimmigrant traded in his Coca-Cola Classic name for the New Coke-esque, generic moniker: SPORTS, was the day that some slowhiteguy could easily knock him out in the first round, 135-82. Will the swguy have what it takes to beat one of Cougarboard’s favorite mods in the next round? Stay tuned.
  • 3 Slim vs. 14 Ham: What a great matchup, Slim vs. Ham. Not for Ham who thought he could ride the coattails of Hambone’s meteoric rise to fame as the host of the Cougarboard Bracket Championship (nice try Ham). Not really for Slim either who wasn’t even really happy to be here, as he just doesn’t get happy about things very much. But for the fans, a Slim vs. Ham match is just a funny pairing. Of course Slim wins 168-52.
  • 6 LiveCoug vs. 11 Littlerich: Littlerich called every last one of his marching band buddies back from the glory days to get out and vote in his favor. Apparently, it takes a bit longer than ten years for all those wounds from the “brown-pancakes incident” to heal, because none of the band buddies answered his calls and he lost to LiveCoug 155-57.

  • 1 Superkid vs. 16 SUAVO: In its first tournament ever, Southern Utah Academy of Violent Outbursts was starstruck and could never muster much of an offense. Superkid was nice and let SUAVO borrow some practice pennies as they left their jerseys on the plane. They were really just happy to make the dance, as the 175-44 final score shows.
  • 8 Turnpike Lane vs. 9 TonyStark: In one of the least competitive 8 to 9 seed matchups, TonyStark wins 135-72. Turnpike Lane claims that he would have received more votes if he had kept his last moniker of “lawboy,” but in fact he would have received sixty or so anti-lawyer votes and lost even worse.
  • 4 Mayor of Cougartown vs. 13 CougarHut: This matchup was so one-sided it was like the Mayor of Cougartown was playing with himself alone. He didn’t even have to take his sweat pants and jacket off. We hope you show up next year, Hut. This one ends in favor of the Mayor, 147-68.
  • 5 Supercoug vs. 12 byuguns55: This would have been a tie if not for the myriad of flagrant fouls called against byuguns55. He actually shot Supercoug in the knee at the end, so technically this final score of 129-84 is a forfeit-win for Supercoug.
  • 2 SuperTank vs. 15 macaroni: Proclaimed the most overrated “Super-” of all the other supers, Tank looked only slightly vulnerable against the streaking macaroni who is set himself up for a strong start next season. Alas, SuperTank finishes with a 139-75 statement against his critics. It looks like he won’t truly be able to prove himself until later rounds as he draws the 10 seed Y’zFan next.
  • 7 Ruby Soho vs. 10 Y’sFan: Despite the final 118-92 score in favor of Y’zFan, Ruby Soho insists that the fans are wrong and that he actually won the round. He is already talking smack to SuperTank for the next round.
  • 3 PharmCoug vs. 14 billyrust: In what was one of the most embarrassing plays of the tournament thus far, billyrust’s pandering for votes only served to drive voters away. I mean, he was always going to lose, but at least he could have lost with dignity. PharmCoug wins 150-63.
  • 6 Mr Bassman vs. 11 OldCosmo: A solid upset for OldCosmo. Mr Bassman kept it close, but in the end, maybe it was one too many El Joffrey-style condescending smiley faces that earned him too many enemies. OldCosmo wins one for team-west-bleachers, 123-98.

  • 1 thaws vs. 16 Oceanographer: Hardly a contest, thaws finished off his opponent with class as we all would have expected, 171-42. But ultimately it’s Oceanographer who is the real winner when he received some of thaws’ life-changing, sage spiritual advice during the handshake at the end. What did he say? you ask: “Don’t mess with thaws, loser.”
  • 8 TN_Coug vs. 9 purplmonkeydishwashr: Just as the critics were saying, it really was just the ridiculous moniker that got purplmonkeydishwashr into the tournament as a 9 seed. It’s not hard to see (the joke here is that TN_Coug is an optometrist, get it? #dadjokes) why TN_Coug won this round with a 148-58 final score.
  • 4 Cosmo Kramer vs. 13 I’mBatman: It was close until Batman applied some kind of Chinese healing balm that limited his productivity. Who told you to put the balm on, Batman? Bad move. Kramer moves on with a 147-50 victory.
  • 5 supertux vs. 12 Rivers Cuomo: This looked like it was set up to be another 12 seed upset, but supertux never even broke a sweat in this 138-67 trouncing. Rivers was pretty cool with the outcome, but felt that it was bush-league of supertux to diss his girl.
  • 2 Sid Vicious vs. 15 kotacoug: Sid spent a significant part of yesterday trailing the relentless would-be giant slayer kotacoug. What was the hold up? Mostly he had to keep correcting spelling errors. It’s “Vicious,” people. “Viscous” is a different word all together, and visious, viscious, and visous are not words at all. Finally he was able to win over the evening crowd last night to take the match 110-97.
  • 7 Smoke Monster vs. 10 Snorky: In another “Can’t they both lose?” matchup, someone had to win enough of the votes-against-the-other-guy to move on. Turns out that Snorky has trolled one too many times and loses this round 112-97.
  • 3 Ragnar Danneskjold vs. 14 Kilgore Trout: Wow. This was one of the biggest point-spreads of the first round. A decisive 175-34 victory for Ragnar. What could possibly explain the incredible discrepancy? Was it Ragnar’s reputation as a no-nonsense Cougarboarder? Did he just have the eye of the tiger? Was his testosterone-infused moniker just that much more potent than Kilgore Trout’s testosterone-infused moniker? I guess we’ll never know.
  • 6 messi vs. 11 Hoosier Cougar: Hoosier Cougar had a chance to tie this up at the end with two free throws, but he did them granny style, missing the first and airballing the second. A disappointing end to an otherwise thrilling matchup. messi moves on with a gut-wrenching 106-104 final score.
