Ten Things For Next Season In Basketball
Looking forward to next basketball season I see some things I would like to happen for the team:

1. Collinsworth return. I think he knows that without some kind of outside shot he has no chance of succeeding in the NBA and that he will not be drafted. The improvement he showed in free throw shooting shows me that he has the work ethic to make improvements. This will be the first full offseason for him without missionary legs or an injury.

2. Kaufusi needs to develop more basketball skills, particularly with his back to the basket. I would have him watch video of Wisconsin center Frank Kaminsky. Corbin has a lot more athletic ability and now he needs to translate that into basketball skill. Kaminsky has excellent footwork and knows how to get to the basket and score.

3. Emery and Fischer have to give us a decent threat from outside the arc. Having both be legitimate threats increases the pressure on the defense. We also need one of the guards to become a threat to put the ball on the floor and take it to the rim. Winder was the only one to consistently be able to do that last year. Chatman may become that player.

4. Aytes has to live up to his press clippings and be a scorer down in the low post. Everything I have heard tells me he can do this and it will stop teams from ignoring us inside. Davis will also give us more depth and strength both in scoring and rebounding.

5. Austin (assuming he is back) gives us defense and rebounding and not much more. I am at a loss as to why he has not developed a scoring mentality in the paint.

6. All of our big men, Kaufusi, Neilsen and Austin, need to learn how to “show in the paint”. By that I mean they have to get position in the paint to receive a pass that allows them to either score or be fouled. Karnowski at Gonzaga is very good at establishing himself in the paint and he now has a soft right and left hand shot close to the basket.

7. Calvert returns from his mission and I am not convinced he will find a lot of minutes. With those players coming the next year he may get lost in the shuffle and become another Luke Worthington. The problem is he will have already served a mission. He will have to step us his game and earn minutes. He was the player of the year in Colorado coming out of HS and I have to assume he can shoot from beyond the arc.

8. Seljaas will be the wild card on next year’s team. He has shown a lot of potential and his ability to hit the three ball and stretch defenses could make him a valuable player, both next season and after his mission.

9. Bartley is an enigma wrapped in a riddle. He has so much athletic ability and at times I see him making progress and then he regresses. I think some of it has to do with his confidence. It would not surprise me if he announced a transfer in the next couple of months. If he stays in the program he has got to become a better ball handler and he has to develop a consistent outside shot. Teams seemed to figure out that he mantra is to put his head down and go to the rim and they played him accordingly.

10. Finally, on the date of LOI I want to see both Gavin Baxter and Frank Jackson commit to BYU to keep the pipeline full.
