Use some of your electives to take mechanic and engine work classes. Most high schools have a shop and learning some basics will serve you for years... lots of money to be saved.
I regret not taking them and even condider picking up a couple of classes at a local community college. It is painful to drop your car off at a shop for something you know is relatively simple but is still just intimidating enough that you don't want to try it yourself. Money out the door. Not only are you paying their hourly rate but you are likely paying 200% to 300% markup on any parts they use. Learn the basics of engines and save yourself a lot of money over the years.
