Well, Koy was looking at it
with Walsh as a starter for the first 2 to 3 years of his college career, followed by Shoemaker for 1 or 2 years. Shoemaker was probably the biggest QB recruit BYU had landed until that point in their history (at least back to McMahon). Shoemaker was the Ben Olson and Jake Heaps of his time for BYU...Undefeated 3 year starter out of Colorado who had several big time offers.

That was such a confusing time for BYU football...we were all kind of waiting for Paul Shoemaker, and he plays half of a game against Washington, where he throws something like 3 passes, and really never sees the field again. It was completely weird. I still remember how confused the ABC announcers were for that game at half time, "Apparently Shoemaker didn't hand the ball off well enough in the first half, as we now see Kevin Feterik."
