I always cheer for their opponents, unless they are playing the yewts or the trojans, and then I will reluctantly cheer for the bum devils. I think the disdain comes from similar encounters to those that you mentioned, and the basic arrogance and ignorance of 18-19 year olds. Fortunately, I didn't need a teaching assistantship so I didn't spend any class time with them, but encounters in the open gym playing basketball became annoying. I did take an institute class there each semester so I could park in the middle of campus and obviously met a lot of nice LDS kids there. My experience is that most folks don't care too much about the sports prowess or lack thereof, of their grad school.
