Martzen didn't understand the LDS culture or the importance of recruiting
the top in state athletes. This is not a knock on him personally like some people seem to take it. BYU could be the most unique place to recruit, or at least one of them. Geoff did not think that high school football in Utah was very good. Maybe it isn't compared to some other states but when 8 out of the top 10 recruits from the state go out of state to programs like USC, UCLA, Stanford, Oregon State, Wisconsin, etc, then there probably is something to the talent level here and more focus could and should have been put on that.

Like I said, I'm sure it would be a very tough job and if your are not LDS or at least don't understand the culture that well, it would be even harder.

By the way, and there were other factors but five kids from last year's recruiting class, all within 20 minutes of LES and some of them Legacy kids, all went to P5 schools. You can't lose those kids that are in your own backyard.
