in the airport and packing, then unpacking. We did 6 days in Oahu and 9 in Kauai one year and I think I prefer just picking and Island and staying, especially if it's for 8-10 days. But, if this is a one shot deal where you may not be back to Hawaii for a while or ever, then splitting it up might not be a bad option so you can check them both out. I would just recommend trying to stay at lest 10 days so you get the most out of it.

If you just go to Kauai, look at maybe splitting up your time North in the Princeville/Hanalei area and then South in Poipu. Also, it rains more in Kauai on the North Shore(Princeville) in the winter months so if you are planning on going then, I would probably change my vote and say Maui. I like staying in the Kaanapali area if it's Maui.
