When you lose top players from a bad D, how much have you lost?
Now, we are replacing 6 of the top 10 tacklers from last year. That list includes PoVey, Stout, Bills, Daniel, Leavitt, and Fua, in that order. I thought the majority of CB would be happy to finally see PoVey move on. Just sayin'.

Stout was an average MLB, Bills an oft injured safety (good when he wasn't injured last year, though), Leavitt an undersized safety who usually bit hard on play-action, and Fua a late bloomer who finally contributed.

It's what it is. The thing that has made the biggest difference during the BM era of BYU defense is experience in the LB corps. When we've had experience there, we've almost always had a good defense. When we haven't, well, we haven't. The '08 D saw Doman, Bauman, and Clawson join Nixon as starting LB's. And the D was horrible. The very next season those same guys that we'd written off as untalented formed the corps of a very good defense.

Last season saw Kaufusi, Pikula, Langi, Stout, JLD, Alisa, Warner, Heder, Kautai, and Tautu all try and muddle their way through the year. Almost all were either in their first year of contributing, first year on the team, or first year at the position. While Stout and Alisa graduated and Kaufusi should be moving back to DE, the rest gained valuable experience last year. I expect the LB corps to be significantly improved. And again, when the LB corps is good, the D as a whole has generally been good.

Not saying we don't have issues to solve. As usual at BYU, the secondary is a work in progress and the DL has something to prove. Those should give you pause on sipping the koolaid. But still, it's fine as a fan to hope for good D this year, and there are reasons that hope might not be in vain.
