I agree with you that the timing of the losses is most important.
But if BYU runs the month of September and then loses three games you'll have a hard time staying ranked. Remember, your schedule is
September:
Nebraska
Boise
Michigan
UCLA
October:
UCONN
ECU
Cincy
Wagner
November:
SJSU
Missouri
Fresno
USU
Out of those 8, let's assume one loss is to Missouri. That's acceptable, no one will blame you too much for that. What about your other two? The only team on that list that looks like it could have 10 wins is USU, and if you lose your last game it's going to hurt more than a mid-season loss. Losing any of the other games on the schedule knock you back into the high teens (17, 18, 19) except Wagner or SJSU or Fresno probably knock you out of the ranking altogether.
