They could easily do it if they went to a true tri-mester setup like BYU-I
I think the biggest effect would be on any research that goes on during the summer. In the Physics dept, almost all of the professors were working exclusively on research during the summer. All grad students were working on their research full time during the summer. The actual class load is fairly light during spring/summer. Obviously you would have to both increase the number of classes offered and require certain students to go during the summer.
