The result of the OP was several people doing research to determine whether or not the original claim was valid. The effect of a rumor propagating post (i.e. Player A was arrested, suspension likely) is quite different, especially in the event that the claim is in fact false. In that scenario, readers are less likely to wait or do research before commenting or spreading the claim. The effect is different because the intention was different.
