That could backfire on the parents

Actually, they are asking for it regardless. Sometimes, lies can become more difficult to keep hidden the longer they go. When/if it comes out that they are playing him down, it is not going to be pretty. Kid will suffer the repercussions of the dad's dishonesty and then he is going to be even more mad at dad.
