Educational subsidies are different than sports subsidies
Most people don't have problems subsidizing the educational mission of the university. However, will all the money coming in through TV contracts, there is certainly well-founded disdain for subsidizing sports. Since tax dollars are collected under threat of force, there is certainly justification for being watchful of how the funds are spent.

Ironically enough, just a couple of months ago, a friend of mine that is a big UU fan was complaining about tithing funds being used to subsidize BYU sports. I was really shocked that an otherwise intelligent man would believe something so ridiculous. I thought only the most virulent anti-BYU Ute fans still believed that. However, he seemed totally oblivious that the UU athletic department was subsidized with tax dollars, which are not donated like tithing.
