Quite simple: money comes from revenue, and pay for overhead
Most professors at the UU and elsewhere have a pretty simple equation - research grant expenses must not exceed research grant money. Though there are usually few gray areas in any accounting, this should be the same for any P5 athletic department. Athletic department expenses should not exceed the revenue received from tickets, donations, and TV.

However, professors also have to pay an overhead rate. Overhead rates are also standard operating procedure in the business world. So, the athletic department should pay some portion of it's revenue to the core (educational) side of the university.

UU should be doing it, and all other state-sponsored P5 universities should be doing it as well. Sports is a big enough business to be putting money into the university. It should not be taking money out of the taxpayer-funded educational side.
