You think I like my state tax dollars going to UVA or VT? I've also made the same point to my commonwealth government officials. However, I respect UVA as an institution, and neither school is BYU's rival.

Think about it, though. You are using the "everybody does it" excuse. Is that really a good excuse for anything? Can't you come up with any better logic for subsidies? Neither can I.

Also, it is factually wrong. Privates don't do it (BYU, ND) as well as at least one state school (Texas).
