My best guess on his philosophy is that the kicking team has to allow you to catch the ball anyway so why call a fair catch. Either way they need to give you space and the split second that is required to catch the ball. If you don't call a fair catch at least you have a chance to take a few steps and advance the ball. So far it has worked well for him he seems to have great hands.

Am I wrong here, is there a huge advantage to calling a fair catch?
