Fair catching cautions the D against making a penalty. Not fair catching dares
the D to light you up. The added caution on the D actually buys you that split second to recover if you bobble the ball or have to readjust to it last sec. It also gives you the chance of scoring a penalty on an overly enthusiastic defender (which happens quite a bit).

Honestly, I wish Hanneman would call more fair catches than he does. He took a couple needless chances last game--that luckily turned out okay. He does secure the ball well, though he's still only so-so on making the catch. He definitely makes me nervous. He's gotten lucky a few times, if you ask me (& I say this as one of the few outspoken Hanneman fans on the board).
