The problem with the blue zone is the defense is "condensed". You can't send receivers "deep" when you only have 20 yards of field (including the end zone) to work with. Because of this the reads are much tougher and experience is much more important -- you'll notice Rosen had the same issue in the UCLA game.
Add to the fact that UConn basically knew we weren't going to be able to run the ball, they could sit back in a zone defense that made reads difficult.
