This is actually a case where not being in a conference helps
I think all conferences have adopted a rule that limits what can happen if you enroll a non-qualifier. The NCAA requires the player to sit out a year and focus on academics, and that's the extent of the NCAA rule. I don't think they can get a scholarship, but they can get some of the fringe benefits (tutors, special classes, etc.). There are some posts above contradicting this saying he'll be on scholarship this year, but I'm not sure how that is possible given the NCAA rule.

All of the major conferences, on the other hand, have adopted rules about non-qualifying students. They basically say if a non-qualifier enrolls in a conference school, that player will never be eligible to participate in intercollegiate athletics at any conference school. Basically if BYU were in the B12 or P12 this year, by allowing Lake to enroll, the conference rules would make him ineligible for sports at BYU and any other conference school for the duration of his academic eligibility. Being independent gives BYU more freedom to take in non-qualifiers without conference restrictions.
