Being ranked doesn't make you national. It makes you ranked.
You really are delusional.

In the PAC 12 there are two schools that could probably go independent, USC and Oregon...and Oregon only because of the bazillion dollars that Phil Knight has given and would continue to give. In the Big 12, Texas and Oklahoma...and Oklahoma probably struggles. In the SEC, Alabama. maybe LSU...maybe Florida. In the B1G, Michigan and Ohio State. In the ACC, Florida State

That's probably about it. It takes cache' to go independent and make it work. Utah isn't in the same stratosphere of the schools that could make it work. Who would buy your product outside Utah?

BYU is unique because it's the flagship university of an international organization. Utah is a state college...with a couple of years of success. It's not college football royalty. BYU is unique because it has a unique story to tell. Utah...what makes it different from Kansas...or Wyoming...or Indiana? Well this year, it's ranked. Success is fleeting...but a few schools can whether those down times and remain relevant because they are college football royalty. Utah is not that. Alabama was down but was always Alabama because of that cache'. Texas is mired in the dumps...but it's still Texas. When...and it's inevitable...when Utah is mired in the dumps, who would pay? They have no story if they aren't ranked. BYU does. It's a peculiar school. It's different. It has a story...and it has fans nationwide...even internationally. It also has it's own network with state of the art equipment and production values that nearly match ESPN. In fact, that's part of the reason ESPN signed up.

Without a conference, who buys Utah's product? KUTV? How far does that get you?
