I would say that using the "potential scale," Michigan is one to two points at most better than BYU, meaning that if BYU put up an 8-10 like you are suggesting, Michigan would have to put up a 8-9 in order to win.
For example, I would say BYU put up an 8 at UCLA. The problem is that UCLA put up a 6-7ish which resulted in them getting a one point win at home. By saying that if we put up an 8-10 then Michigan would only have to put up a 4-6 to win is like equating BYU to UNLV in my mind.
