You realize that Cal and Utah are almost identical in yards and passing yards
allowed, right? Total yards is 386 (Cal) to 373 (Utah), and passing yards is 249 (Cal) to 238 (Utah). Cal has given up a few more points per game. With a schedule that's overall probably as good if not better (I think UW > Oregon this year). Terrible defense is right.
