Heaps had the ball taken out of his hand for several games.
He threw the ball 31 times against Florida St. Then 45 times vs Nevada and 55 vs Utah St (131 attempts/45 per game). BYU lost all three games by a combined score of 39-92 and were never competitive in any of them. BYU ran the ball 85 times in those three games (28 per game).

Then over the next four games (SDSU, TCU, Wyoming & UNLV), BYU went 3-1 and Heaps threw only 101 times (25 per game). BYU ran the ball 191 times (48 per game).

Heaps never had command of the team or the offense early in his career. The coaches didn't trust him either. They relied on the run game and tried to make a him a game manager.
