It was born out of the 3-3-5
Bronco wanted and probably still wants to run the 3-3-5 he was part of the group of coaches that really developed that scheme. It was a nightmare defense to face. He came to BYU as DC and BYU started recruiting to that scheme. One of the classes had almost every defensive player brought in get suspended for an HC/Rape incident which threw that whole plan out the window. BYU still went with it, but it was not as effective since BYU did not have the quality or quantity of athletes to run it. When it became apparent to Bronco (he was HC by then I believe) that BYU was more adept at getting quality LB's in the program than DB's he went to a 3-4.

The truth is BYU is or was equally adept at getting quality D Line players as it was at getting LB's then they all seemed to head north. The scheme hurts recruiting to be sure. I am not sure you have a way of transitioning to that scheme unless it happens organically. If somehow BYU had a bevy of quality Dline players and were thin at LB, maybe just maybe the coaches would see fit to change it up. If BYU went to the scheme right now, we would get torched because we lack quality and depth at the Dline position.
